Florida’s West Coast Beaches

Updated: Oct 8, 2018

Who does not like sunsets on the beach? If you are in the sunshine state and want to see the best sunsets on US’s east coast, you have to visit Florida’s west coast (I know, sounds confusing). There are many beaches you can visit, from the famous Anna Maria Island to the popular Panama City Beach. However, if you want to stay close to the city and urban areas, Tampa’s side may be your best choice.

Florida’s west side best beaches are:

Clearwater Beach was named this year the #1 beach in the US and #7 in the world according to TripAdvisor. Clearwater has many things to do for all ages and preferences, from delicious bars and restaurants to fun water sports and dolphin watching experiences.

During the day you can spend some time at the beach chillin’ or, on the other hand, rent a jet ski. If you bring a car, you can park on a public parking or garage around the area using the app ‘ParkMobile’ or a meter. Around Pier 60, there are many options and the hourly rate is usually $3.00/Hour (DO NOT PARK ON THE RETAIL STORES).

After tanning a bit, direct yourself to one of the restaurants across Coronado Dr or Causeway Blvd for lunch/dinner. Marina Cantina has a beautiful view to the marina and serves authentic seafood with a Mexican style. Remember not to take long, you shouldn’t miss the sunset at Pier 60. Every day, a group of artisans, crafters, and street performers are featured at Pier 60. The daily festival starts two hours before sunset and lasts two hours after sunset. It is a unique experience to see the sunset, walk and listen to a sweet saxophone while admiring some handmade art.

Lastly, if you like to keep on and continue the day, don’t miss the nightlife at the bars around the area, like Shephard's Tiki Beach Bar and Grill (typically closes at 10pm) or you can also check the calendar of events. Have you thought about Oktoberfest at the beach?

Treasure Island and Madeira Beach are pretty nice, calm and close to each other. If you want to relax and forget about the world, this is the place to go. There are many old-fashion hotels in front of the beach, you just have to walk a few steps and the sand will be in your feet. Bring food of your own if you want to spend the day at the beach or on a boat. Of course, you can always try the little local restaurants but the peace and the waves might not let you go far away.

John’s Pass Boardwalk has a few cool places for dinner or ice-cream. I recommend a themed experience for kids with the Pirate ship and then, for adults, eat and drink some beer at Pirates Pub & Grub. If you are interested in a romantic beachy date night with live music and a sunset view on the boardwalk, then The Hut is the perfect place for you.

Don't miss the 10th Annual Sanding Ovations Masters Cup from November 14 - 18, 2018. Sculptors will create sand art pieces to compete in the largest masters competition in the Southeast United States. Judging and voting for the People’s Choice Award is Saturday, November 17th from 3pm to 6pm. Meanwhile you can enjoy the beach food court, the arts and crafts marketplace, and three days of live music at the beautiful Treasure Island.

St. Pete Beach is close to Treasure Island and Madeira Beach, this white sandy beach is different from St. Petersburg City, which is located on the mainland to the east. Also known for being the sunset capital of Florida, this barrier island community is home to the beautiful Don CeSar Hotel and the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum… all located in Gulf Blvd at Pass-a-Grill National Historic District. If you wonder how untouched beaches look like, this is your chance to discover it!
