The comeback of Drive-In Movie Theaters

Updated: May 23, 2020

Believe it or not, despite COVID-19 one drive-in movie theater led all the US box office the week of April 17 according to Gitesh Pandya, Founder and Editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com. The Ocala Drive-In, located pretty close to Orlando, was the only theater showing new movies across the country that week. Now, many wonder... Is this the time to revive drive-in movie theaters? It certainly looks like a safe activity!

Although we are slowly returning to the streets, indoor cinemas will not see the light for a while and the reality is that people are desperate for some entertainment (outside their homes). Still we all want to stay safe and follow the social distancing guidelines. But as it is said, in the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity. Dezerland Park in North Miami is aiming to entertain us in with a modern twist. After a while negotiating with the city to get permission, it was finally approved. The park will host drive-in movie nights at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. through July 3! So start checking your engines because CARFLIX Cinema is getting ready to start the show in Miami this upcoming Friday, May 22.

The theater will be located at 14401 NE 19th Avenue, Miami FL. It's pretty close the FIU Biscayne Bay Campus, right next to Dezerland Park Miami.

A 13 by 40 ft. LED Screen, like the ones used in advertising but with much better resolution, will be used allowing daytime viewings. Audio will be transmitted through a radio station that you just have to tune-in before the movie begins.

A total of 150 cars will be allowed per showing, so make sure you arrive a few minutes ahead! The movie will start 45 minutes after ticketed time and parking will be based on a first-come-first-serve basis, so you'll want to be there on time to get a good spot. SUVs and trucks will be parked in designated areas to avoid blocking the screen for smaller cars.

  • Tickets are sold online only, $30-40 per car + tax.

  • Full concession service will be available onsite with hot dogs, snacks, and canned drinks, these will be ordered online and delivered to your car.

  • Outside food is now allowed! So you can bring your popcorns!!
