When you think about Florida, what fruit comes to mind? Oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and all types of citrus right? That’s because the sunshine state has been planting these since 1500s when Spaniards brought them for the first time. The subtropical climate and the sandy soil make Florida ideal to flourish them between September and June.
If you want to discover more and try different types of fresh fruits like oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, and tangelos this season… Read below.
There are about 50 citrus nurseries in the sunshine state and Polk County, in Central Florida, has the highest production. This might be the place you want to visit to try some oranges.
I went to Ridge Island Groves, a family-owned business dedicated to produce fresh citrus, produce, marmalade's, honey, jelly, and fresh squeezed orange juice. It was DELICIOUS! I tried all types of citrus fruits. You can choose from almost 10 types of citrus fruits: Navel oranges, page oranges, ruby red grapefruit, tangerines, honeybell tangelos, red navels oranges, orange tangerines, valencia's, and grapefruit. My favorite, the page orange.
And yes, they let you take them from the trees! They even have a tour where you go around the Groves to grab your favorite fruit and, then, you can see how oranges are processed through the machines. The price is around $8 per person.
There are many other places you can visit to see hundreds of orange trees. Not so far away is the National Historic Landmark, Bok Tower Gardens, with a beautiful landscape that includes the Singing Tower and many orange trees.
